One of my favorite frank songs simply because of it's simplicity, message and the connection to one of my favorite movies. I was watching forrest gump on the weekend and i noticed many different elements that reminded of why frank chose to write this song. I've posted multiple times on the various meanings behind this song and the best part is there's so many ways to look at it.

This is the beauty of franks writing, it's like solving a puzzle or uncovering easter eggs and there's no wrong answer, we'll never know the deeper meaning behind his decisions, all we can work with is facts. Frank saw himself as jenny, he didn't just write the song so he could share his feelings but because there was a deeper meaningfrank saw himself as jenny. In the movie jenny was given shit, she had an abusive father, her home was destroyed and she loved multiple men but ended up abused and miserable, she loved forrest but couldn't be with him. Frank sees his lover as forrest, someone who had everything and went where life took him, he had a girlfriend, he was happy whereas frank was drowning in the absence of his lovers love. Remember what frank said in his letter? He had been with all kinds of women but they wouldn't give him the same sensation this man did. Compared to frank who was torn about not being loved back, his lover had what frank wanted, love.

He ran inside the house to his 'girlfriend' and wouldn't confess to frank for another 4 years.

Likewise, forrest told jenny he loved and wanted to marry her years into their friendship whens he came back. Forrest is constantly running away from problems such as franks lover.

Instead of coming out of the closet, he waited 4 years as he kept running from the truth.secondly, pathways. In the movie forrest and jenny were on complete different pathways, forrest was in vietnam whereas jenny was working at a club, thousands of miles apart. Forrest was running across the country whereas jenny was working as a waitress, forrest was meeting the president whereas jenny was playing music on sidewalks with her hippie crew. They loved each other but were on different pages, much like frank and his lover, they loved each other but frank was one step ahead, he wanted a relationship whereas his lover was already dating a girl. 4 years after when his lover confesses, frank is already past it. They loved each other but not the same amount at the same time much like forest and jennythanks for reading guys! I really enjoy figuring out and piecing together dots.

As always, these are just theories but franks pen game is so strong that even 4 years after the release i still end up finding and thinking up of concepts that go together, forrest gump is one of the most beautiful, elegant love ballads written, it's simplistic with a super rich deep background, definitely one of the strongest songs off channel orange.
